Holy Family Roman Catholic School, located at 2731 Center Road in Poland, Ohio, opened for classes in grades one through eight in September, 1958, with Sister Rita DeChello, O.S.U. as principal. At that time, there were two first grade classrooms, one combined seventh and eighth grade classroom, and one of each of the remaining grades. The enrollment was 350 students. Eight classrooms on the first floor were completed with the help of parishioners. In 1959, two rooms were finished on the second floor. As the school enrollment increased during the next three years, the eight second floor rooms were completed as well as a new library. Enrollment grew during the next several years and a half-time kindergarten program was added in the 60’s. The first class enrolled at Holy Family graduated in June, 1966. During the 70’s and 80’s, Holy Family developed long range plans that included an all day, every day kindergarten in 1981, a Middle School concept (implemented in 1991), a full gymnasium (dedicated in 1997), and state-of-the-art technology installed, including satellite dish, VCR/TV control center, closed circuit TV in every classroom, and a fully equipped computer lab (all completed in the 90’s). During the summer of 1993, the school was renovated to include new drop ceilings, floors, brightly colored walls and a completely asbestos-free building. Our new library is above our beautiful gym and contains reading materials for all grades. In 1997, the process of purchasing adjoining land for future expansion of the school facilities began. The land was purchased in the spring of 1998. During the summer of 2003, a security-telephone system was installed throughout the building. This has been instrumental in improving our ability to communicate within the building. Parents are able to access homework assignments and voice mail of individual teachers. An important part of the history here at Holy Family has been the Ursuline Sisters, who have served as teachers and principals since the beginning of our school in 1958. There have been seven Ursuline Sisters as principal from 1958 to 2005. Our parish school and community has been blessed because of the time and direction the Ursuline Sisters have provided for all of Holy Family Parish. Our current principal, Mrs. Christine Kijowski, has over 23 years of teaching/administration experience. |
